Global warming caused by the emission of greenhouse gases, has become perhaps the most complicated issue facing the man on the earth. 72% of the totally emitted greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), 18% Methane and 9% Nitrous oxide (NOx). Carbon dioxide emissions therefore are the most important cause of global warming. CO2 is inevitably created by burning fuels like e.g. oil, natural gas, diesel, organic-diesel, petrol, organic-petrol, ethanol. The emissions of CO2 have been dramatically increased within the last 50 years and are still increasing by almost 3% each year. However, CO2 is a stable molecule, and energy is required to convert it; hence CO2 conversion makes sense only if the input energy is from a renewable source such as sunlight.
We are currently exploring semiconductor photoelectrodes for the conversion of CO2 to carbon-contained fuels by photoelectrochemical strategy. Water is generally used as reducing agent to provide the electrons and protons for CO2 reduction. Thus, our work should actually cover the researches on the overall water splitting and CO2 reduction.
Research interests:
1) Photoelectrochemical water oxidation;
2) Photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction;
3) Photocatalytic CO2 reduction;
4) Electrochemical water oxidation.
